maren + michael

our business story is a love story.

we began in a darkroom… literally. maren’s first words to michael were spoken under the deep red glow of the photo darkoom lights at the local college. 21 years of marriage, 25 cameras, 12 countries, 7 surfboards, 5 snowboards, and 3 cute kids later, and here we are- side by side, crafting timeless wedding imagery for our clients to enjoy for a lifetime.

So, tell us, how do you roll on a wedding day?

Mostly ninja-style- we’re everywhere, but covert. Flies on the wall. We want to catch as many real and fun moments and expressions from you and your guests as we can. Also, when there’s two of us shooting, Maren is able to get the bride and her ladies getting ready while Michael is with the guys. Often, during the sunset “glow” hour we might spend a few minutes with just you and your new spouse getting some beautiful images-  a mix of “naturally posed” images and fun “in-between” shots; it’s also a rare time during the day for couples to be alone and lovey-dovey together.

How long have you been photographing weddings?

We’ve been shooting weddings for at least twelve years now. So, we know what we’re doing and can adapt to all kinds of surprises that happen on one of the most amazing days of your life. We still find it all totally thrilling!

Wow. Over 12 years. Though you still seem young.

Thanks.

Tell us a little about your post-wedding process.

We gather all of the images we’ve taken and for a full day wedding, for example, will cull them down to under 1,000 so that it’s not overwhelming. On average, it’s about 100 images per hour of the day that are kept. Then, we polish (crop, color, highlight, etc.) each and every one of those images. Our primary editing “look” is real and timeless, and include a few black and whites; we may also toss in a few trendy filters because we’re cool like that.

You make albums?

Yes, definitely. Having a physical story book of your day is wonderful. Click this link to get a glimpse of what they’re like: http://applemoonphotography.com/blog/?page_id=1684

Considering your experience with weddings, any advice for couples on their big day?

Remember your priority- each other. Relish the love and attention from your friends, family, and professionals, but remember to connect with each other throughout- even if it’s just a hug, kiss, or a whisper amidst all the liveliness.
